Who is Krampus?
Krampus is a figure from traditional Alpine folklore, especially prominent in the regions of Austria, Germany, and parts of Slovenia. Far from being a simple “holiday monster,” Krampus emerges from a deep well of pre-Christian winter traditions—rituals that marked the turning of the year, the return of the sun, and the importance of community harmony. His appearance is striking: horned, fur-covered, and often carrying bells, birch rods, or chains that rattle through the snowy streets. But beneath this dramatic exterior lies a symbolic role rooted in balance and moral guidance.
Historically, Krampus accompanied Saint Nicholas during early December festivities. While Nicholas rewarded kindness, diligence, and generosity, Krampus served as a vivid reminder of the consequences of mischief or neglecting one’s duties. Yet his purpose was not cruelty. In the Alpine imagination, Krampus functioned as a playful—sometimes rowdy—counterweight to Saint Nicholas, using humor, spectacle, and gentle scares to nudge children and adults alike toward better behavior. His presence reinforced community values, emphasizing that actions matter and that the warmth of the season grows from kindness, cooperation, and respect.
Over time, the Krampus tradition evolved into lively parades and “Krampuslauf” (Krampus runs), where elaborately costumed participants fill village streets with bells, laughter, and theatrical antics. These events celebrate cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and the communal joy of winter gatherings. Today, Krampus remains a cherished symbol of Alpine folklore—a reminder that even during the darkest days of the year, a little mischief and reflection remain integral to the celebration.

Who are the Valkyries von Krampus?
It started small. An intrepid group of Krampus enthusiasts, plus a few folks who had never even heard the name, came together in 2024 with the goal of bringing a newfangled holiday spectacle to San Antonio, one with centuries of history and both a dark and festive side. Inspired by the olden Alpine tradition and the creativity it could unleash in our city, these mysterious founding members, known as the Valkyries von Krampus, introduced the city to its very first Krampus Parade on December 5, 2024.
